***Darcey***

It was too dark in the trees to see Brian’s face, but she could hear both the love and pain in his voice. “Your parents weren’t around then?” she asked, then wished she hadn’t when he looked over at her, his eyes full of pain. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you. I shouldn’t have asked.”

He shook his head. “No, it’s okay,” he said, then paused and took a deep breath. “My parents didn’t know how to handle me. That’s why they sent me up here to stay with Dean so much. He was good at that kind of thing. Everyone sent their teenagers up here. He’d teach us to ride, how to take care of the horses, stuff like that, but for some of us, it was more than that. By the time I was a senior in high school, things with my parents were getting better, but...well, this is the part I never talk about.”

Darcey squeezed his hand. “It’s okay, Brian, you don’t have to tell me anything until you’re ready,” she said. “I understand about parents. Mine could never understand why I wanted to go into security. My mom thought I should stay home and be a housewife like she was, and my dad was horrified when I started working security and carrying a gun. He didn’t talk to me for six months. We barely talk now. We’re just so different, and, well...they just don’t understand me or my life.”

Brian didn’t say anything but she was distracted by the clearing they’d stepped into and the moonlight sparkling on the water as it tumbled over a waterfall in the stream. A fine mist rose from the pool that had formed at the bottom of the cascading water, a green layer of fuzzy green moss-covered everything but the top of the boulders that lined the creek, and the air was filled with the smell of fertile earth and plants.

She paused, looking around, then looked over at him, and smiled. “This is amazing,” she said. “Like a little paradise in the middle of the forest.”

He smiled back at her, but she could see that he was still tense. “I’m glad you like it,” he said. “It’s a nice place to get away and think. We’ve all been coming here since we were kids.”

They stood on the edge of the stream, watching the water flow down the mountain, but the air between them was filled with things unsaid. Brian finally turned to her, pulled her over to a boulder, grabbed her by the hips and lifted her up, then sat down next to her. He watched the water for a few minutes, then turned to her, his eyes full of indecision. She reached over and took his hand, pulled his arm around her, and snuggled up to him.

“You don’t have to tell me, Brian,” she said, meaning every word she said. “Whatever happened, it was a long time ago. I’m more interested in who you are now than who you were back then.
